Case Study: Milestone – Lady Eleanor Holles School – UK

Milestone Helps Making Lady Eleanor Holles School a Safer Place for Pupils and Staff
Custom-built soft button on XProtect Smart Client helps empower reception and security
staff to ensure only authorized people enter the schools premises.
“The system is so simple you just don’t think about it anymore. If authorised members of
staff want to review an incident we know we can find the relevant recording sequence
swiftly now…and we know that it will be of sufficient quality to identify individuals in
volved. Before we went to 100% perimeter security we would get occasional trespassing
incidents. Now we stop them at the gate.”
The Challenge
The Lady Eleanor Holles School needed to prevent unauthorized access during the con
struction of a large new wing because of concerns about loss of building materials and
new IT equipment. More comprehensive surveillance coverage was also needed to deny
intruders access to the school grounds and buildings, thereby preventing theft of school
equipment and pupils’ belongings.
The Solution
The school engaged Milestone Platinum Partner, Kent CCTV, to install a HD quality IP
video system with Milestone XProtect Enterprise 2014 at its heart, with a total of 64 Axis
cameras now deployed site-wide. The Milestone VMS manages and provides easy access
to images which are viewed from the school receptionist’s desktop PC and from the head

of technical support services’ workstation.

The Advantages
By securing the school’s perimeter through a combination of an intercom, identity card
reader and camera system covering the pedestrian gates and vehicle barriers; while
putting cameras alongside the access control system at the doors and fire exits of all
buildings, the school now prevents any unauthorized visitors from entering the school’s
grounds.
About the Solution
Cameras are monitored, and recordings managed, through Milestone XProtect Enterprise
2014. XProtect manages and provides easy access to images which are viewable from
the school receptionist’s desktop PC and from the head of technical support services’
workstation.
Kent CCTV put the open architecture of XProtect to work, customizing Milestone XPro
-tect Smart Client 2014 to create a ‘soft button’ in the control bar at the top of live views
of both pedestrian gates. This button enables the receptionist to release the relevant
pedestrian gate with one click of her mouse once a visitor’s identity had been checked
via the intercom and on-screen camera view.
Gate-fitted cameras were enhanced by uploading Automatic Number Plate Recognition
(ANPR) software into them and then integrating these with the gate controller and a
database of known number plates, enabling pre-registered vehicles to pass through both
gates without additional verification.
Both Axis and Sony IP cameras fitted across the school are now viewable remotely
outside the normal school day by both the school’s caretaker and its head of technical
support services, using Milestone Mobile software.
All Axis cameras are Power over Ethernet, minimizing cabling around the site. All cameras
are networked with two virtual servers, which together hold 31 days of recorded images,
currently requiring a maximum of 16 Terabytes (TB) of storage space.

Milestone Mobile
Milestone Mobile extends access to images from cameras to the school’s caretaker who
monitors the school outside teaching hours. The school’s head of technical support services
is also able to access live and recorded images remotely if a problem is reported.
Milestone Open Platform
Milestone’s open platform architecture in XProtect allows clients to choose from the
widest range of network cameras and select the best ones for any given task. Milestone’s
open Application Programming Interface (API) makes it easy to integrate XProtect with
other edge devices and security, access control and building management systems.
Milestone’s open approach also enables partners to easily customize the look and feel of
XProtect Smart Client to better meet the needs of the customer.
About Lady Eleanor Holles School
The Lady Eleanor Holles School, based in Hampton, near London, is one of the UK’s most
highly regarded independent girls’ schools in the UK. It was established in the early eigh
-teenth century, when a trust for its endowment as a Christian foundation was created
under the will of Lady Eleanor Holles, daughter of the second Earl of Clare. First located
in the Cripplegate Ward of the City of London, a plaque on one of the Barbican walkways
marks its original site. The school went on to occupy other premises in the City until 1878,
when it moved to Hackney. The current purpose-built premises in Hampton was opened
in 1937 by HRH Princess Alice, the then Duchess of Gloucester.
