Milestone XProtect and Milestone Mobile Client provide around- the-clock video
surveillance for 153-piece Picasso exhibit at the
Tomie Ohtake Institute, Brazil
The Challenge
Art Institute and security management professionals needed to design and
deploy a continuous 24/7 video security solution to monitor and protect the
rare collection of 153 pieces on exhibit at the Tomie Ohtake Institute, in São
Paulo, Brazil.
The Solution
Milestone XProtect Video Management Software (VMS), a set of Axis 3007-PV
panoramic view network cameras, and the free Milestone Mobile Client were
used to provide a total, 24-hour video security solution.
The Advantage
The XProtect VMS securely managed, displayed, and recorded video data for
live, real-time monitoring, and stored video for the forensic review of events.
The Milestone Mobile client enabled remote viewing of video images on iOS or
Android mobile devices, in addition to the user interfaces using computers with
high-speed Internet.
Since its opening in 2001, the Tomie Ohtake Institute has been recognized
as one of the few places in São Palo specially designed—architectural and
conceptually—to host national and international exhibitions of visual arts,
architecture, and design.
As a tribute to painter, printmaker, and sculpture Tomie Ohtake, the Institute
develops exhibitions that focus on the last 60 years of the artistic scene, as well
as on earlier art movements that lead to a better understanding of Ohtake’s
works and influences. The collection of 150 Picasso paintings from the Musée
Picasso Paris is a perfect example of the works shown at the Institute.
The Tomie Ohtake Institute covers 2,300 square meters, divided into seven
gallery areas. For the Picasso exhibit, two large galleries, each measuring
300 square meters were used. According to the systems integrator, the
security objective for the Picasso exhibit was to make sure that there were no
surveillance blind spots of the exhibit space.
“The Tomie Ohtake Institute is very popular among Brazilians. In 2014 alone,
the Institute welcomed more than 1.3 million visitors to 210 art exhibits,” said
an integrator representative. “In this case, we carefully studied the location
to determine the best plan for implementing a video monitoring and security
system.”
The Picasso exhibit’s total video security solution included the Milestone
XProtect VMS, Milestone Mobile client, and Axis 3007-PV panoramic network
cameras. The integrator also installed an Allied Telesis PoE Switch and SPEEDY
fiber optic technology. The staff in charge of operating the system was provided
with detailed user training and a general course on the use of video security.
“Thanks to this total surveillance solution, there were no incidents during the
Picasso exhibit,” said the integrator. “The system helped prevent problems and
created a safe and secure experience for everyone who attended.”
“Picasso: Erudite Hand, Wild Eye” was open from May 22 to August 14, 2016,
and featured 116 works by the Spanish master—34 paintings, 42 drawings, 20
sculptures and 20 engravings, as well as a series of 22 frames by André Villers
made in partnership with Picasso. The exhibition also included 12 photographs
by Dora Maar, three by Pirre Manciet, and films about the works and their
creative processes.
